Require consistent views

Ask for front, rear, both sides and a canopy view. Candidates photographed differently are difficult to compare fairly.

Include a scale reference

A measuring pole or person placed near the same plane helps prevent perspective from exaggerating size.

Separate appearance from condition

A sparse crown may reflect recent pruning, while a dense crown can hide branch structure. Record capture date and recent maintenance.

Use photos to shortlist, not to guess

Confirm the dimensions and current identity of shortlisted trees before selection. A useful record connects each image set to one Stock ID or candidate reference.
